When I first saw this material in the museum's collection, I had no idea about the role Detroit had played in the making of The Americans and even moreso, in the larger Guggenheim project as Frank had originally proposed. I had a rare opportunity to speak with Robert Frank in 2001 - he mentioned Detroit was unique and his intention was to "do the story on the factory" - he was referring the Ford Rouge factory. At any rate, its a very rare body of work. In Detroit, it's timing is interesting particularly because of the influx of photographers looking to capture our "beautiful decay" as some locals have referred to it.
